American Airlines Pet Policy Guide

TRANSPORT OR MOVE YOUR ANIMAL
     Depending on the breed and size of the animals, they may travel as checked baggage or be transported by American Airlines pet policy. Available pets are limited to cats and dogs that meet size, age and destination requirements.

     We accept registered pets only for U.S. military personnel and U.S. Department of State personnel traveling on official orders. Fees and restrictions apply. Fully trained service dogs can fly without a cabin if they meet the requirements.

     Animals in cabins
American Airlines allows cats and dogs to travel in the cabin if they are at least 8 weeks old and the weight of the pet and carrier does not exceed 20 pounds. (9kg). Small animals must remain entirely inside the carrier and under the seat for the duration of the flight. The pet boarding fee is $125.
Pets in checked baggage
American Airlines accepts up to 2 pets as checked baggage for U.S. Active Duty and U.S. Department of State Foreign Service personnel traveling on official orders. Unfortunately, no other pets are allowed as checked baggage.

     Animals in cargo
Dogs and cats can be transported as cargo on American Airlines Cargo, also known as American Pet Embark. Each passenger is allowed 2 pets at least 8 weeks old and weighing no more than 100 pounds (45 kg). Prices vary depending on the distance traveled.

     Operator Guidelines
For animals traveling in the cabin, the size of a soft-sided carrier must not exceed 18" x 11" x 11" (45 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm) and the size of a hard-sided carrier should not exceed 19" This should not happen. Fully trained assistance dogs can fly in the cabin for free if they meet the requirements.
