Liposuction

Our bodies are unique, and each of us has a different type and structure that is determined by genetics and metabolism, as well as lifestyle choices. For some people, losing weight comes easily, while others struggle to get rid of stubborn fat even with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

If you are someone who is struggling to get rid of stubborn fat in certain areas of your body even after multiple gym sessions? Liposuction might be the solution you've been looking for. This popular cosmetic procedure can help you achieve the body contour you desire.

What is Liposuction?

It is a cosmetic surgical procedure of removing stubborn pockets of fat from specific areas of your body, such as the under the chin, arms, abdomen, hips, and thighs. The procedure involves a  suction technique that helps permanently remove fat cells from a particular section of your body that you want to improve.

Why is it Performed?

The surgery is performed to remove fat deposits that usually don't respond to diet and exercise. Thus it isn't a weight-loss or weight-reduction procedure rather is done to reshape one or more “problem” areas of your body.

The procedure is also sometimes done with other cosmetic surgeries, such as facelifts, breast reduction, and tummy tucks.

Apart from common cosmetic procedures, it is also used to treat certain medical conditions such as:

  • Lipomas - benign fat tumours.

  • Gynaecomastia - abnormal breast enlargement in males.

  • Lipodystrophy - issues with fat metabolism.

  • Hyperhidrosis - excessive sweating in the armpit area

What Are The Benefits of a Liposuction Procedure?

The benefits of liposuction include:

  • Reduction of stubborn fat in specific areas of your body.

  • Improved body contour and shape.

  • Boosted self-confidence and self-esteem.

  • Long-lasting results with proper diet and exercise.

  • Minimal scarring and a relatively quick recovery time compared to other surgical procedures.

What Are The Types of Liposuction Surgeries?

There are various types of liposuction surgeries available to suit different goals. Some common types include:

1. Tumescent liposuction: involves injecting a solution of saline and medications to facilitate fat removal.

2. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL): uses ultrasound waves to liquefy fat before removal.

3. Power-assisted liposuction (PAL): utilizes a cannula that moves back and forth to break up fat for easier removal.

4. Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL): uses laser light to liquefy fat cells for easier removal.

Our surgeon will help you decide which type of liposuction surgery is best for achieving your desired results.

What Happens Before and After a Liposuction Procedure?

Before a liposuction surgery

  • You will have a consultation with our plastic surgeon to discuss your goals, medical history, and any potential risks or complications.

  • Our surgeon will evaluate your overall health and determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

  • They may also take photographs and mark circles and lines on your concerned areas to be treated.

  • You will be provided instructions on pre-operative preparations such as avoiding certain medications, quitting smoking, and staying hydrated.

Your doctor will advise you to:

  • Stop particular medications like blood thinners and painkillers a week or two before the surgery. These medications have the propensity to increase bleeding during and after the surgery.

  • Fast for 8 to 10 hours before the procedure; an empty stomach reduces any potential risk during the administration of anaesthesia.

  • Stop smoking.

On the day of the liposuction surgery

  • You will be required to sign an Informed Consent Form (ICF) after you have been explained the risks and benefits of the surgery.

  • You might also have an anesthesiologist’s evaluation for fitness for surgery.

  • Make sure to maintain your fasting stage (no liquids no solids) 8 to 10 hours before the procedure.

  • Depending on the technique, you will be given either local or general anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia numbs only the targeted area of your body, while general anaesthesia induces a temporary state of unconsciousness, and you will not be aware of the procedure.

  • The surgeon will perform the procedure to remove fat cells from the targeted areas.

  • The length of the procedure may last for several hours depending on the amount of fat to be removed and the specific technique used.

  • Our team will closely monitor your vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen levels during the procedure to ensure your safety.

After the liposuction surgery

At The Clinic

After the procedure, you will stay in the recovery room for about 30 minutes to 1 hour until the effect of the anaesthesia wears off.

  • Your vital signs such as pulse rate, body temperature, and blood pressure will be monitored during this time.

  • Painkillers will be given by your doctor to provide relief.

  • If it’s a bulk reduction procedure, temporary drains will be inserted to promote fluid drainage, and will be advised to stay overnight to make sure you’re not dehydrated due to the fluid loss.

At Home

At the time of discharge, your treating surgeon would give you a set of instructions to be followed at home.

  • Painkillers to alleviate pain.

  • Antibiotics to reduce the risk of infection.

  • Plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

  • Elastic bandages/body tape or any other type of compression or firm-fitting garment may be advised to help reduce swelling and bruising, for a few weeks post the procedure.

  • You can expect a faster recovery if the procedure was done to remove fat from localized areas of your body. You can return to work the next day.

  • Your doctor will advise you on how to take care of yourself to minimize the likelihood of liposuction scars or complications as you heal.

What is The Cost of Liposuction?

The cost of liposuction can vary depending on several factors, including the extent of the procedure and the areas being treated. However, it is important to note that only cost should not be the factor considered when deciding on a surgeon or facility for your liposuction procedure.

It's crucial to prioritize safety, expertise, and quality of care above cost to ensure the best possible outcome. We recommend discussing your concerns and budget with our plastic surgeon during your consultation to determine the best course of action for you.
