FIVE MONTHS IN: SHE TOOK ON THE ATTORNEY GENERAL’S OFFICE AND WON

Within five months of joining Mova Law Group, Jaeger went to court against the California Department of Justice in a wrongful death action arising from an in-custody death at a Sacramento state prison, and won the ruling that kept the case alive.

The State of California and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation had moved to end the case on a procedural technicality, arguing that the decedent’s mother had missed the deadline to present her government claim. Had that argument succeeded, the family would have been permanently barred from ever reaching the merits of how their son died. No jury. No trial. No answers.

Jaeger drafted the reply brief and argued the petition for relief in Sacramento County Superior Court against a Deputy Attorney General from the Attorney General’s Correctional Law Section. Her brief did not hedge:

“Defendants’ opposition is a masterclass in elevating form over substance… If a trained Deputy Attorney General can make a calendaring error, surely a layperson mourning her son’s death while in state custody can be forgiven for misidentifying the correct claims-processing entity.”

SEVEN MONTHS IN: FROM “NOT ANOTHER PENNY” TO NEARLY $10 MILLION

Two months after the Attorney General’s Office ruling, a case Jaeger had been litigating since her first weeks at the firm resolved for $9,982,259, the entire remaining limit of a $10 million policy.

The client, a 70-year-old man, was stopped and waiting to turn when a commercial pickup truck owned by a construction contractor rear-ended him at high speed near Oroville. He suffered fractures to his cervical spine and went straight into emergency spinal fusion surgery, then hospitalization, then a skilled nursing facility.

The carrier opened at $500,000. At mediation it moved to $2.5 million and told the plaintiff’s team it would not pay another penny.Jaeger responded by filing 14 motions, including multiple motions to compel, sanctions motions, and a motion for trial preference. The defense ultimately quadrupled its offer.

Then, the discovery war. Jaeger built an enforcement campaign against three defendants across all four categories of written discovery — 12 motions to compel further responses, each one preceded by her own meet-and-confer letters and telephonic conferences with defense counsel. She documented more than thirty hours of that work in support of sanctions.All twelve were granted + Monetary sanctions were awarded on every one!

A CASE THE DEFENSE VALUED AT ZERO — RESOLVED FOR $5 MILLION

In a Sacramento premises liability matter, Jaeger’s discovery work helped drive a case that opened with a zero offer to a $5,000,000 recovery — every dollar of available insurance.

The client was injured getting out of his car at a business whose parking lot had been left in serious disrepair. Because of his diabetes, the consequences compounded; the injury ultimately cost him a toe. The defense fielded four separate law firms and a total of eight attorneys. One insurer tendered a $2 million policy and the firm believed additional coverage existed that had not been disclosed.

Multiple motions were to discovery whether there were additional insurance policies. That law-and-motion pressure preceded the acknowledgment of the additional coverage. The full $5 million was paid across two different insurance policies.

BACKGROUND

Jaeger graduated magna cum laude from California Western School of Law in San Diego, where she served as Senior Editor of the California Western Law Review and International Law Journal. She earned two Distinguished Advocate Awards — in the Gill Trial Competition and the Legal Skills II Competition — along with a Student of Distinction Award and three Academic Excellence Awards for the highest grade in class, in Property I, Federal Crimes, and Trusts & Estates. She competed on the Moot Court team and tutored first-year students in Property. She holds a B.A. in German, with a minor in French, from the University of Vermont.

Before law school, she spent a year with AmeriCorps, worked in the nonprofit sector, and served in animal control and code enforcement, where she successfully referred multiple animal cruelty cases for prosecution and led the largest large-animal cruelty seizure and case in San Diego County.

Admitted to the California State Bar in 2021, Jaeger practiced across employment and consumer rights litigation, family law, and civil litigation before joining Mova Law Group.
