A transmission mechanism is needed to transfer the data from the source to the target. This information is usually a signal that needs to be transmitted over long distances. This is why the transmission medium can be wireless or wired. In the second case, the signal is transmitted along a wire from one device to another. In wireless transmission, however, no physical conductor is needed to carry electromagnetic waves.

 

Data cables are an important part of computers because they provide connections between various hardware elements. This allows the computer to communicate with its different elements. Data lines also allow a computer to communicate with other computers.

 

Basic Definition

 

Basically, a data cable is any type of medium capable of carrying binary electrical transmission signals. Binary data is a sequence of "1's" and "0's" that is transmitted as an electrical signal between two locations.

Data cables enable communication between hardware components within the PC. A good example is the hard disk drive cable used to connect the hard disk drive to the motherboard. This allows for the electronic transfer of information to and from the hard drive.

Peripheral Cabling

Peripheral devices, such as cameras, scanners, and printers, are also connected via data cables. These data cables can be USB or FireWire.

 

As mentioned earlier, data cables are used to send information between devices and systems, such as servers, PCs, and other hardware components.

 

What are the types of data cables?

 

There are three main types of data cables used to transmit data: twisted pair, coaxial, and fiber optic cables. These three types of cables are used in different environments.

 

Twisted Pair Cable

 

Twisted pair cable is used primarily for computer networks and telephony. Most cable networks are wired using shielded twisted pair, a type of data cable that has a protective layer to reduce the amount of signal attenuation from other sources. Twisted pair cable gets its name from the twist in the wire that spans the entire length of the cabling. The twist in the wire helps protect data transmission from signal degradation. There is a limit to how far a twisted pair cable can extend before the signal is damaged.

 

Coaxial Cable

 

Coaxial cable (also known as coax) is used in older computer networks. Coaxial cable was replaced by shielded twisted-pair cable as the standard for the computer industry. However, coaxial cable is still used in wired networks to provide data for television communications. Coaxial cable is a large, round wire with an internal core for sending data. Surrounding the core are insulators and shields to preserve data communication signals.

 

Fiber Optic

 

Fiber optic cable is the recommended option for fast data connections. Telephone and cable companies use fiber optics to provide secure and fast Internet connections. Fiber optics uses light and glass as the mechanism for data transmission.
