You need to put a stop to these harassing calls, and face this issue before you let it get out of hand. Dealing with harassing phone calls is the only way to make them go away.

What can you do? There are different ways you can deal with a phone harasser (I.E. calls made by someone who uses any means to intimidate you, such as silence, heavy breathing, threats, etc.). However, before you take any action, you need to carefully think through your options and decide what course of action is best suited for your specific situation. The following are some helpful tips on what you should and should not do when dealing with harassing calls:

What you should not do:

- Do not call the harasser back - Your first instinct may be to find out the harasser's number and call them back. This is not a good idea because you run the risk of adding further fuel to the fire. You will likely only make the situation worse, resulting in more frequent and aggressive calls.

- Do nothing - Don't take phone harassment lightly. Although the harassing caller may eventually become bored with phoning, you can't take this chance, especially since the individual could be dangerous. Additionally, by doing nothing, you're letting the harasser know they can get away with their crime, which may encourage them to harass other phone consumers.

- Do not be afraid to report threatening phone calls - As soon as a caller threatens you or any other person in your household with physical harm, immediately report this to your phone company and the authorities. Try to tell them everything you can about the call, including what was said, what the person sounded like, the time of the call, the phone number, etc.

What you should do to put an end to harassing calls:

- Find out more information on the harassing caller - Lookup the caller's phone number in a to find out their information. If their name and address is not revealed, conduct a pay-per-search service to learn this information. Once you learn this information, the next time the harasser phones, you and address them by their name, tell them you know where they live, and you've notified the police.

- Ask the phone company to block the number from calling you - Although you can screen the calls with your caller ID, you can also ask your phone company to permanently block the number from your phone.

- Change your number - if the phone calls will not stop, and there is nothing your phone company or the authorities can do, you should change your phone number and make sure it remains unlisted so that it cannot be found with a forward search. Also, only give out your new number to people you trust.
